The general principles of an ICLT curriculum Ideologies of interculturality Interactivity Unity of language and culture Integration of the global and the local. Fundamental principles for ICLT 1.The principle of interculturality With the Principle of Interculturality the teacher should take the advantage of the intercultural environment in the ELT classroom and find every opportunity possible to build up the learners’ intercultural sensitivity and critical awareness across languages and cultures. 2.the principle of interactivity The more interactive the teaching is, the more sensitive the participants are to the culture. 3.the principle of unity of language and culture Awareness of the cultural dimension of the linguistic structures and forms will enhance the learner’s linguistic competence. 4.the principle of integration of the global and the local Internationalization of ELT involves the teaching of English as an international language. Localization of English involves the teaching of local variety of English. The four principles mentioned above suffice to distinguish the intercultural communicative approach from all other approaches to ELT. Principle for setting goals and objectives Goals are general statements describing qualities which the learner is expected to develop and possess through an educational program or course. Objectives,on the other hand,are statements describing the more immediate qualities which a learner is supposed to develop or possess.In other words,objectives are the more precise statements about what content or skills the learner must master in order to attain a particular goal. The ultimate goal of the intercultural communicative approach to ELT in China is : to develop the learners’ intercultural communicative competence in English and to acquire an intercultural speakership.
