* Horizontal collectors are installed in trenches or are placed on grade. They are covered with gravel and then additional lifts of waste are placed on top of the trench. Horizontal collectors are constructed of approximately 100 mm thick slotted PVC or HDPE pipe. An alternate construction is to use alternately “nest” 100 mm and 150 mm thick piping. * * Again, here are two examples of landfills that use horizontal collection pipes. The photo on the left shows a site in Bangkok, Thailand, where the collectors are in trenches. The photo on the right shows the horizontal collectors installed at grade, at a site in California. Landfill gas may be recovered from other collection points such as leachate chambers, sumps, vents, and drains. Landfill gas may exist at any of these points and can be recovered through use of an effective gas extraction system. As with any landfill gas collection system, the efficient and complete collection of landfill gas from these additional areas helps to control landfill gas emissions and odors. * The landfill gas collection system consist of a series of extraction wells, horizontal collectors and lateral piping to direct extracted gas to the blower/flare station. Lateral/header piping can be placed below or above the surface of the landfill and is typically constructed of HDPE or PVC piping. The pipes are sized based on the estimated quantity of the gas to be extracted and the pressure drop. The piping system is generally looped to provide alternate flow paths and to provide the ability to close off sections of the system for maintenance or repairs. Pipes are generally sloped to promote condensate drainage. A typical sign of a condensate blockage is a drop in vacuum. * * LFG in a landfill is saturated with condensate liquids consisting of primarily water and various organic and inorganic compounds.
