Laboratory experiments and clinical trials have showed that emodin has a renoprotective effect against the development of chronic kidney disease. The effect may be resulted from the inhibition of TGF-β activity and cell metabolism. Rhubarb may prevent the progression of renal disease by multiple effects on the metabolism of renal tubules and mesangial cells, and meanwhile its toxicity may exist. This paper discusses the strategies of using rhubarb to increase its efficacy in treating renal disease and to avoid the adverse effect as well. Keywords rhubarb; renal
