Depletion region In semiconductor physics, the depletion region, also called depletion layer, depletion zone, junction region or the space charge region, is an insulating region within a conductive, doped semiconductor material where the charge carriers have diffused away, or have been forced away by an electric field. The depletion region is so named because it is formed from a conducting region by removal of all free charge carriers, leaving none to carry a current. Understanding the depletion region is key to explaining modern semiconductor electronics: diodes, bipolar junction transistors, field-effect transistors, and variable capacitance diodes all rely on depletion region phenomena. History of diode Although the crystal (solid state) diode was popularized before the thermionic diode, thermionic and solid state diodes were developed in parallel. The basic principle of operation of thermionic diodes was discovered by Frederick Guthrie in 1873.Guthrie discovered that a positively-charged electroscope could be discharged by bringing a grounded piece of white-hot metal close to it (but not actually touching it). The same did not apply to a negatively charged elect
