Abstract Analysis of Chinese and Western Language Taboos in Teaching Chinese as A Foreign Language Analysis of Chinese and Western Language Taboos in Teaching Chinese as A Foreign Language Abstract In the process of teaching foreigners Chinese, taboos have always been a very sensitive topic. Every country and every nationality have their own taboos, topics and customs that should be avoiding during polite discourse. The majority of the students in the class are Western students, therefore knowing the taboos between Chinese and Western cultures can contribute towards the smooth conduct of teaching foreigners Chinese language. In this thesis, I use literature research, analogies, examples and observation to analyze the phenomenon of Western language taboos. I first discussed the cultural factors which affect the process of teaching foreigners Chinese. I classified the taboos between Chinese and Western culture, analyzed the causes of these language taboos and finally proposed the appropriate countermeasures. In the process of teaching foreigners Chinese, Western language taboos are an important factor to be considered and understanding the differences between Chinese and Western language taboos can contribute to the smooth conduct of teaching foreigners Chinese, helping to achieve the educational objectives. This thesis aims to help both teachers and learners to deepen their understanding of language taboos through close analysis of the phenomenon, thereby enhancing the effectiveness of cross-cultural communication and ultimately achieving the purpose of helping foreigners to learn Chinese.
