Acknowledgments I would like to express my most gratitude and appreciations to my supervisors, Prof. Liu Hong, Associate Professor Huang Jianli, Prof. Wang Gungwu, Associate Professor Su Jui-Lung. Prof. Liu has guided me to go beyond the narrow research topic and engage in the academic frontiers. He has also provided me with all kinds of supports throughout my candidature. Associate Professor Huang has always encouraged me to find out the main thesis that can stand out among the most research work. Prof. Wang has stimulated me with a lot of insightful comments. Associate Professor Su becomes my main supervisor after Prof. Liu Hong left for University of Manchester. I’m benefited immeasurably from his continually caring for my study life. My gratitude also goes to Associate Professor Wong Sin Kiong, Associate Professor Yung Sai Shing, Dr Lee Chee Hiang. They have kindly offered help with my dissertation in one way or the other. I’m especially grateful to Prof. Takashi Hamashita and Prof. Chen Chunsheng. Prof. Hamashita has shown much interest to my research and generously shared with me his thoughtful ideas. Prof. Chen has shown much concern on my study for many years since I began my research in Sun Yat-sen University. I’m also thankful that he provides me with a workstation during my latest period of dissertation writing. Lastly, I owe my gratitude to my family. My husband, Dr Zhu Chongke has accompanied all the way from my BA, MA to Ph.D. I’m enriched so much from his humor and critical thinking. When my baby was born in my fourth year of candidature, my mother-in-law has helped to take good care of him. Without their sincere support, the dissertation may not come out in time.
