Structurally, this thesis is classified into five sections. Chapter One, on the basis of a brief description of the background of the characterization of the protagonist “Gatsby” and a general review of the previous critical studies on the novel, outlines the perspective adopted and the issues approached in this thesis by using the theory of narcissism in the analysis of the tragic fate of the protagonist of the novel. Chapter Two attempts to lay the favorable and theoretical groundwork for the development and advancement of the later sections. It presents knowledge of mythological narcissism, and mainly introduces the theory of Freud, Otto Kernberg and Heinz Kohut—the three most influential theorists in the realm of narcissism research—from two aspects: the origin of narcissism and the traits and diagnosis of narcissistic personality, all of which are closely and helpfully linked to the present research. With the help of the theory of “narcissism”, Gatsby can be diagnosed to be a typical narcissist. Chapter Three devotes to the detailed investigation of Gatsby?s narcissism.
