Objective T o eva lu ate the d istribution o f active T ce lls and nature k iller ce lls ( NK ce lls) , as w ell as the in terferon ( IFN ) leve l in tubercu lou s pleu ra l effu sion s and m alignant ones. M ethods The p ercentages o f ac tive T ce lls ( CD3+ HLADR+ ) or NK ce lls ( CD 3- CD 16+ /CD 56+ ) in tubercu lou s p leural e ffu sion s ( 23 cases) and m a lignant ones ( 22 cases) w e re detec ted w ith flow cy tom etry. IFN levels w ere also m easured w ith E lisa m e thod. R esults Com p ared w ith m a lignant pleura l effu sion s, tube rculou s pleral exudates show ed a h igher percen tage of active T ce lls and conta ined m ore IFN. T he p ercentage o f active T ce lls w as positive ly corre la ted w ith IFN in tuberculou s p leural effu sion s. T here w as a h igher p ercentage of NK ce lls in m a lignan t pleura l exudates
