Acknowledgements I‘d like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to all the teachers in the School of Foreign Languages, Hunan University of science and technology, and who have greatly benefited my intellectual growth in linguistic studies through their inspiring lectures. My cordial appreciation goes to Associate Professor Hu, my supervisor. Without his professional guidance, enlightening advice, kind encouragement and invaluable reference books, this thesis would be impossible. First of all, he introduced me into the field of linguistics; the courses he offered and the academic experience he imparted enlarged my horizon and imbued me with initiative and creativity.
