Abstract
There has been a long tradition of using translation as a means for learning a second or foreign language. However, along with the development of foreign language teaching theories and linguistic theories, it has been questioned constantly since the later 19th, especially with the popularity of audio-vision method and communicative approach. It is thought that negative transfer would take place in the learning process from the first to the second or foreign language, translation has negative effect in developing students’ ability to think in English, and it neglects to develop students’ listening and speaking abilities. Therefore, it is believed that the elimination of the mother tongue from the learning environment as much as possible will be helpful for rapid and
easy English learning at senior school.
Should translation be totally rejected from English class? Many language teachers find it a valid activity for language practice and improvement, and they usually have the experience that students do, and always will translate the foreign language into their mother tongue, no matter how often they are told not to. It is a “natural process”(Danchev ), and Atkinson (1987: 41) calls it a “learner-preferred strategy.. .and an inevitable part of second language acquisition”. Therefore, the benefits of translation in English teaching at senior school should be fully exploited by combining it with other more innovative pedagogy in order to help learners improve their English ability.
On this regard, in the first part of this paper, the author introduced the background and purposes of the study. In the second part, the author tries to prove the integration of translation with English teaching at senior school by analyzing some basic translation theories and some major translation teaching methods.
