Results: The mRNA expression of SCGB3A2 and 2A1 was obviously downregulated in the tissues from CRS with or without nasal polyps (NPs) patients compared with control tissues. The effects of the different cytokines on these two members are just opposite in the process of nasal explant culture. The tissues from CRS with NPs express higher levels of SCGB1D4 and 1C1mRNA than tissues from CRS without NPs and controls. The mRNA expression of SCGB2A2, SCGB 1D1 and SCGB 3A1 was apparently upregulated in the nasal mucosa from CRS patients without NPs compared with CRS with NPs and control tissues. Immunohistochemistry revealed weakened protein expression of SCGB3A2 in epithelial cells and submucosal glands in samples from CRS patients. No association between the UGRP1 -112G/A SNP and CRS, any subgroup of CRS, or CRS severity could be found. Conclusion: Secretoglobin polypeptides may play an important role in the pathogenesis of CRS and correlates with disease severity and response to surgery. Different cytokines can regulate Secretoglobin family expression in nasal mucosa differentially through modulating mRNA.
