School ofC ivil Engineering, LanzhouUniversity ofTechnology, Lanzhou 730050, China) Abstract: As to the vertical earthquake responses of themult-istorey isolated buildings, the regulations inChinese code for seism icdesign ofbuildings are different from the investigations of the response of isolated buildings in Ja pan andUSA seismic codes (FEMA 450). To better understand the responses of isolated buildings undervertical earthquakes, the vertical response spectrum and the time history analysis areused. The results demonstrate that the vertical earthquake loads on isolatedbuildings are the samewith the fixedbase buildings except from those in near fault. As tomult-i storey isolatedbuildings, whichhave the small ratioofheigh-twidth, the results also indicate that the vertical earthquake loads do not have any effect on the responses of these buildings and can be neglected in smallearthquake, while the tension and stability of bearings should be investigated including vertical earthquake loads in large earthquakes.
