ABSTRACT The substation automation system is going into new development with the implementation of IEC61850 standard ， advancement of non-conventional measurement transformers , the application of computer network technology and the development of intelligent breakers. The digital substation is becoming the tendency of future substation. The research focuses on the network communication in digital substation based on IEC61850This dissertation contains several parts: the analysis of IEC61850 ；scheme of digital substation communication network ；model building of data stream of network communication in digital substation and simulation of network communication. First ， this paper analyzes the major technical indicators of IEC61850 and the structural characteristics of digital substation，such as function leveling，object-orient digital substation modeling ， Abstract Communication Service Interface ， Special Communication Service Mapping. The digital communications network substation network programs is introduced， including the choice of network topology，network scheme of the process layer and substation layer. The applications of Ethernet in the substation communication network is introduced . As an example of a 345kV~138kV substation ， the shared Ethernet and the switched Ethernet are compared form simulation . Finally ， based on the analysis on the data stream of network communication in digital substation ， the type and rule of arrival time of the data stream of network communication in digital substation . As an example of a D2 substation ， with OPNET network simulator，network model and node model are built. The Real-time packet transmission of Substation communication network are analyzed. The process network of 500kV substation is taken as an example. The real time performance of 3/2 connection form of relaying protection communication network in digital substation，is researched.
