Welcome to Holland Emily perl kingsley 艾米莉 帕尔 金斯利 I am often asked to describle the experience of raising a child with a disability to try to help people who have not had the unique experience understand it, to imagine how it would well. well, it is like this,when you having a baby, Its like palnning a fabulous vacation trip to Italy. you buy a lot of guide books, you make your wonderful plans, The Colosseum, The Michelangelo Daivd, The gondolas and Venice. you might learn some handy phrase in Italian and its all very exciting. After your months of eager anticipation, the day finally arrives and you pack your bags and off. you go several hours later the plane lands and the flight attendant comes in and says, welcome to Holland. Holland? you say,what do you mean Holland? I signed up for Italy!I signed up for Italy! All my life I dreamed of going to Italy! But theres been a change in the flight plan. theyve landed in Holland and there you must stay. The important thing is that they havent taken you to a horrible place. Its just a different place. so you must go out and buy new guide books, you must learn a whole new language, and youll meet a whole new group of people you never would have been exposed to otherwise. Its just a different place. Its slower paced than Italy.But after youve been there a while and catch your breath, you look around and you begin to notice that Holland has windmills, Holland has tulips. But everyone you know is going to Italy and they are all bragging about what a wonderful time theyve there. And for the rest of your life ,you will say, yes, thats where I was supposed to go. thats where I planned. And the pain of that will never go away because the loss of that dream is very significant loss.
