万方数据 万方数据 Abstract In recent years, along as the 3G and 4G networks rapidly being expanded, relative technologies are accepted rapidly all over the world. The carrying capacity of mobile networks are improved and increased continuously. Data services and new value-added services have been the most needed services for users. The mobile communication network will be a multi-terminal, multi-application, multi-service and hybrid transmission network. The kinds of the software on mobile phones have been increasing rapidly. The software provides different services. The amount of software running on mobile phones has increased dramatically due to the start of data network connection services for mobile phones. As a result, there are many defects in the software. It has sometimes become necessary to repair defects in the software. Updating software is a best way to repair defects for users. First, this paper introduces some basic principles about FOTA(Firmware over the air). The principles are difference algorithm and macro-copy program. This paper also introduces some features of firmware updating. Secondly, in order to reduce the amount of data that needs to be transmitted to the handset, this paper introduces a method. It is to only send the delta data corresponding to those parts of the new version of the firmware that differ from the old version. This paper introduces the description method of delta files and a new method to reduce the delta data, so that we can reduce the time of firmware updating in the wireless environment. Finally, in order to reduce the cost, we introduce the Byte-Pair-Encoding algorithm. We use it to compress the program code. Firmware update functions require the compression of program code on the mobile phones and have to compress and decompress quickly. The extraction of Byte-Pair-Encoding is very fast, but the compression speed is very slow. It affects the total time of firmware updating. So this paper introduces a Byte-Pair-Encoding compress
