Abs tract: The force-based seism ic design method is adopted by most of the seism ic codes in the w orld. In force-
based seism ic design method, strength reduction factors is a key factor in determ in ing seism ic design force. In th is
paper the provisions on the strength reduction factors in US seism ic code (UBC1997), Eurcode , Japanese Build-
ing Standard Law, M exico seism ic code, Canada seism ic code and Ch inese seism ic codes are summ arized and some
mi portant remarks on the application of strength reduction factors in seism ic codes are presented. A t the end, the
existing problems in the field are pointed, and the trends of future study are discussed.
