40.From Sentence to Text This is the last chapter of this book, we are going to talk about the uses of sentences in context. 40.1 Sentence and Text Sentence is the highest level of grammer structure, and also the basic linguistic unit of a text. Text , no matter in oral form or in written form, it always combined some related sentence together through some certain ways to reach communication purposes. Through these certain ways, sentences become a unity of Cohesion in structure and Coherence in significance. Thus, sentence and text has an indivisible affiliation. 1.Significance Communication Function The practical application of sentence always appears in a certain context. Sentence with sentence or sentence with context always connects and restricts each other. As the restricted relationship between context and language environnment, it determines the Communicative Function of a sentence. According to Communicative Function, Sentence is divided into Declarative Sentence, Interrogative Sentence, Imperative Sentence and Exclamatory Sentence. This description is based on the grammatical structure of a sentence. But a sentence has different Communication Function when appears in different context and different language environment. 2.Correctness Appropriacy The Appropriacy of the structure of a sentence can only be judged in certain context or language environment. For example, some active sentences can be converted into passive sentences. However, in sepcific context, active sentnce can’t be replaced by passive sentence at random. For example: --The storm destroyed the crops. --The crops were destroyed by the crops Looking separately, they are right. When it comes to follow conditions…… --- What happened to the crops？ ---*The storm destroyed the crops. The correct answer should be: ---The crops were destroyed by the storm. So in grammar teaching, we should pay more attenion to the Appropriacy in context and language environmen
