A A Comparative Study of Two Chinese Renditioas of The Catcher in the Rye under the Framework of Manipulation Theory by Liu jinhua Supervised by Professor Xiao Yunchu Submitted to Foreign Studies College in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Education in the Subject of Foreign Linguistics and Applied Linguistics Hunan Normal University Changsha，Hunan May’201 1 Abstract砀e Abstract 砀e Ca砌∥in the Rye is the only long novel of J．D．Salingeran Amerl。can novelist in the twentieth century．Based on Andre Lefever’S manipulation theory,this thesis tries to find out ideology’S，poetics’and patronage’s influence on literary translation，by comparing帆o Chinese versions of砀e Catcher in the Rye． A mighty uproar was caused when The Catcher in the Rye got published，which strongly influenced the younger generations of America· Its unique expressions and distinctive characters caught American readers’attention，and had a great impact on many a Chinese reader after its introduction into China．This thesis mainly focuses on two of its Chinese versions，one by Shi Xianrong，and the other by Sun Zhongxu· These t、Ⅳo versions have many distinct different characteristics which Call be explained and analyzed effectively by Lefevere’s Manipulation Theory． The 1 980s saw the cultural tuming in translation study,with which the focal paradigm of translation studies shined from linguistic perspectives into cultural dimensions of translation．In 1 990，the cultural tllming in translation studies was formally posed by some forerunners in translation translation studies leaded by Andre Lefevere and Susan Bassnett． Lefevere laid stress on and demonstrated the impact of ideology,poetics and patronage on translator’S choice of original text and translation strategies，and viewed translation as a rewriting of the original text in his Translation，Rewriting and the Manipulation ofLiterary Fame．Living in different times，translators’social-historical and cultural contexts may vary gr
