Method Both the dry ninhydrin spray cans and ninhydrin solution were used to develop latent fingerprints on white copy paper, kraft paper, thermal paper, coated paper, respectively. Additionally, the vacuum metal coating was used to develop the fingerprints on coated papers further. Results Dry ninhydrin had the developing effect as good as ninhydrin solution on white copy paper, kraft paper and coated paper, and even had better effect on thermal paper than ninhydrin solution. Moreover, using dry ninhydrin followed by vacuum metal coating not only the contrast of the developed fingerprints were enhanced, but also clearer fingerprints than using dry ninhydrin alone were obtained. Conclusion Dry ninhydrin spray can is easy to carry, simple to operate and more environment friendly. It has excellent effect in developping fingerprints on common papers. Its advantage over ninhydrin solution is that it can not only develop latent fingerprints on more types of paper, but also can be coupled to vacuum metal coating method to enhance the developing effects on paper of weak permeability.
