* Purpose: The purpose of the next several slides is to discuss the differences between access links and trunk links. These pages are foundation pages for the explanation of frame identification techniques and VLAN Trunk Protocol. Emphasize: While the concepts of access links and trunk links are simple, they are used throughout the remainder of the discussion on VLANs, trunking, and VTP. It is important that students understand their difference. Also emphasize the use of the native VLAN. An access link has a native VLAN that is the only VLAN that it supports. The device on the end of the access is generally unaware that a VLAN id even exists. The switch must deploy some mechanism of identification so that a frame being received in an access link is marked with the correct VLAN information. This can be done with either frame filtering (which is maintaining a table of VLAN-Port assignments) or frame tagging (which is the process of marking the frame as it leaves the port to cross the backplane). Transition: The other type of link in the switch fabric is a Trunk Link. * Purpose: The purpose of this slide is to introduce the Trunk Link. Emphasize: Trunk Links are typically used on switch to switch connections or switch to router connections. They can be used to end devices such as servers, however this is not as common. Trunk Links carry multiple VLANs. A trunk link may have a native VLAN which is the VLAN that it reverts to if the trunk fails, or in the case of 802.1Q, the VLAN Identifier that is used if a frame comes in from a “non-trunk” device. This allows 802.1Q to support trunk links and access links on the same port creating a hybrid link. Transition: There are several methods of trunking information.
