It was a failure. At the end of Prohibition, some supporters openly admitted its failure. A letter written in 1932 by John D. Rockefeller, Jr.—— “When Prohibition was introduced, I hoped that it would be widely supported by public opinion and the day would soon come when the evil effects of alcohol would be recognized. I have slowly and reluctantly come to believe that this has not been the result. Instead, drinking has generally increased; the speakeasy has replaced the saloon; a vast army of lawbreakers has appeared; many of our best citizens have openly ignored Prohibition; respect for the law has been greatly lessened; and crime has increased to a level never seen before.” Prohibition in the U.S. Anything positive? Yes! Prohibition had a notable effect on the alcohol brewing industry in the United States. The post-Prohibition period saw the introduction of the American lager (贮藏啤酒), which dominates today. Prohibition destroyed the fledgling wine industry in the United States. Productive wine quality grape vines were replaced by lower quality vines growing thicker skinned grapes that could be more easily transported. Prohibition also had a large effect on the music industry in the United States, specifically with jazz. Because of its popularity in speakeasies and the development of more advanced recording devices, jazz became very popular very fast.
