Chan and Joly Ho Hong Kong Observatory Abstract In 2000, binary tropical cyclones over the western North Pacific that interacted with each other are Kai Tak and Kirogi in July, Maria and Prapiroon in August as well as Bopha and Saomai in September. Owing to the interaction, the tracks of these tropical cyclones are generally erratic and difficult to forecast. Lander and Holland (1993) have utilized centroid-relative diagrams to illustrate the process of interaction. This process includes approach, mutual orbit and finally merger or escape.
