* * * * * * * * * * * * * * Now lets take a look at some ways that the system addresses the common customer concerns of reliability, performance, and cost-effectiveness. There’s not time to go into a lot details about reliability, but you can think of reliability improvements fitting into 3 basic areas: improvements in logic, improvements in hardware, and reduction of the number of pieces necessary to make the system work. Logical improvements include the system’s “distributed logic” design. The idea is that each major component in the system “knows” everything it needs to know in order to do its job. So, no matter what happens to other components in the system, the operating components can continue to function. In a conventional system with “series” logic, if the mastercontrol fails the whole system will fail, which is obviously less reliable. Everybody will tell you that their hardware is premium reliability. (When’s the last time a salesman said that their genset reliability was just “OK”?) A major problem is that customers (and many builders) don’t understand statistical reliability, so it’s difficult to get data and make sound judgements about the relative reliability of competitive equipment. With PowerCommand we have been gathering prototype and field test and performance data for over 5 years now, and can state that the MTBF of the control system is over 200,000 hours. (Anybody know how many years that is?--almost 23 years) Remember this is data--not speculation, and especially that this is the whole system--not just one or two components. Finally, remember the block drawings--just the fact that there are fewer components to fail makes the system more reliable.
