Gnant and colleagues conducted the ABCSG-12 study that enrolled more than 1800?patients who were randomized across the 4 treatment arms: tamoxifen, tamoxifen plus zoledronic acid, anastrozole, or anastrozole plus zoledronic acid. Of note, all patients underwent surgery and radiation therapy prior to randomization. Very few patients received chemotherapy except for a few who received neoadjuvant chemotherapy. The other goal of the study was to determine if aromatase inhibitors can improve clinical outcomes compared with tamoxifen in premenopausal breast cancer patients. Results of the tamoxifen vs anastrozole comparison in the study showed no significant disease-free survival or overall survival differences. This is consistent with results from the Arimidex, Tamoxifen, Alone or in Combination (ATAC) study, which did not show a significant long-term survival difference between anastrozole and tamoxifen.[1] Reference ATAC Trialists’ Group.
