Teaching procedure:
Step I Warm-up
Greetings. Review words by a test of cloze. Students may master them well. If not, show them in ppt and read once again.
Step 2 Pre-reading
Free talk. Ask students some questions to introduce the topic of Qomolangma. For example, Q1: What sports do you like?
Then, introduce some background information of Qomolangma by showing some pictures. Lead them to use English to describe.
Step 3 While reading
1. Fast-reading
Task 1. Listen and answer Qs. Q1: Where are the Himalayas? Q2: Who were the first people to reach the top of Qomolangma? Student should read quickly and underline the answer in the passage.
Task2: Activity 3a
Let students read the article and match each paragraph with the main ideas.Then check answers.
Careful-reading
There are three tasks related with the three paragraphs. Students should fill in the blank, finish the mind map and answer questions. I use different tasks about each paragraph, which aims to cultivate students’ interest in reading.
Step 4. After reading
Lead students to share their opinion in climbing Qomolangma. Use a motto to summarize.
Step5. Exercise
Work in group. There are some important phrases and difficult sentences in the article. Analyze them by doing exercise of translation. Show the Chinese version of ten phrases like“one of the most dangerous sports, run along the southwestern part of China...” Then, invite Ss to find the related English phrases in the passage. Underline them.
