Abstract The past century witnesses a considerable progress in interpreting due to interdisciplinary studies carried out by scholars from different fields. Ludwig Wittgenstein, one of the most famous philosophers in 20th century committed himself to the study of language philosophy. His later thoughts on language have exerted great influence on interpreting studies. In his master work Philosophy Investigation , Wittgenstein mentioned interpreting for several times, and clearly pointed out that interpreting is a special language game. The primary purpose of this thesis is to provide a theoretical framework to analyze interpreting activity with the reference to Ludwig Wittgenstein‟s Language Game Theory. The issues of figuring out the essence of interpreting and the scope of participants as well as the participation rules in relevance to interpreting activating are meant to be solved within this framework. A plenty of examples are employed to analyze the participation rules in interpreting activity. Major arguments are out forward. Firstly, interpreting is a special language game, in which meaning interpreting is the core issue. Secondly, the scope of participants involves delegates, audience, interpreter, interactive utterance and multiplicity of context, which can be put into categories of presence and absence. Thirdly, all the participants in interpreting activity should follow the Cooperative Principle. Fourthly, presence and absence af
