The objective of communicating with clients (in English) is to make sure that the clients understand what we are saying. Clear and concise English writing is the key to effectively communicating with clients. A good command of the English language. Basic English writing training at college or law school. Thorough understanding of the facts and/or background which you will write in English. Good common sense, logical deduction, and coherent order are a must. Understanding what the clients expect from us (their legal advisors), and what we should deliver to clients. Good English legal writing is, of course, free of typos, grammatical mistakes, inconsistent statements, and conclusions without proper legal basis or thorough legal analysis. Good English legal writing does not sound as though it had been written by a lawyer. In other words, it is easy for a lay person to understand. In short, good English legal writing is plain English. Characteristics of non-plain English: Wordy Pompous Unclear Dull Use of the following legalese wording makes the legal writing complicated – avoid using them: … in the said paragraph; … aforementioned; … aforesaid; … hereto/therein In every English sentence, there are two types of words: (i) working words; and (ii) glue words. Note: Working words carry the meaning of the sentence. Working words vs. glue words: The working words carry the meaning of the sentence. Thanks!
