Clinical study on treating peripheral facial paralysis by acupuncture and GUI XIONG QIAN ZHENG decoction Abstract Objectives: To observe the clinical efficiency of treating peripheral facial paralysis with two different methods, signal acupuncture method and combining acupuncture with GUI XIONG QIAN ZHENG decoction, and to analyze the probable therapeutic mechanism. Methods: Seventy patients diagnosed with peripheral facial paralysis were randomly divided into two groups, signal acupuncture group and combining acupuncture with GUI XIONG QIAN ZHENG decoction. Each group was treated no more than three periods( each period including 10 continuous days). After treatment, accumulation scores , treatment times for curing the disease , clinical efficiency for each group were analyzed with statistics software. Results: Accumulation scores for combining acupuncture with GUI XIONG QIAN ZHENG decoction group(0.17±0.1)were lower than signal acupuncture group(0.71±0.2), there existed significant differences between the two groups(p＜0.05). Treatment times for curing the disease were lower for combining acupuncture with GUI XIONG QIAN ZHENG decoction group(17.83 ± 2.47)than signal acupuncture group(21.92±2.88), there existed significant differences between the two groups (p＜ 0.05). After no more than three periods of treatment, cure rate for combining acupuncture with GUI XIONG QIAN ZHENG decoction group was 88.6% (31 patients were cured, 4 patients were effective) ; Cure rate for signal acupuncture group was 80%(28 patients were cured; 6 patients were remarkable; 1patient was effective). Although there were no significant differences for cure rate between the two groups, cure rate for combining acupuncture with GUI XIONG QIAN ZHENG decoction group was higher than signal acupuncture group.
