The 2-D finite element method can’t be used to simulate the thick plate rolling because the spread in width is not negligible. By using the 3-D finite element method, this study analyzes the thick plate rolling with some conditions including width-to-thickness ratio, interface friction, roll diameter and thickness reduce rate. The numerical results of lateral spread as well as roll force and torque are computed and excellent agreements with existing experimental solutions are obtained.
