PAGE PAGE 4 开题报告 The Functional Equivalence in Movie Subtitle Translation from English to Chinese 一、选题的背景和意义 Since the first film “Exiting the factory” emerged in France which was produced by Louis Brothers in 1895, a new gadget called “Western shadow show” was introduced to China by a Shanghai businessman the next year. Its first show was in the businessman’s villa Xu Garden, naming “youyicun”. So it was regarded as the beginning of Chinese film. At the same time, the film got itself well-known not only in China but also in many other western countries, such as in the USA. It’s hard for everyone to ignore the fact that the importance and overwhelming influence of the Hollywood’s growth. At first, Hollywood was related to the name of a place, located in Los Angeles, California of the USA. Later, a real estate businessman bought a farm at the suburban of Los Angeles. As his wife was fond of the name “Hollywood”, she named their farm as Hollywood. About twenty years having passed, some film directors found this farm quite appropriate for their films’ shooting because of the unparalleled scene of natural beauty, plenty of natural light and a comfortable climate. Gradually, this small place became more and more famous and moreover some films workers started establishing their films’ companies there, including some well-known ones nowadays, as instant, Universal, Paramount, 20th Century Fox and so on. During the decade after World War I, the film industry of the USA reached its prosperous times throughout the whole world with an important figure—nearly 60% to 90% Hollywood films of the USA had the priority to be run in other countries. China was not an exception as well. The Hollywood films of the USA took a 75% account of Chinese film market during the 20s to 30s of the twentith century.
