Unit2 Sports events
Reading The Olympic Games
Teaching aims: Enable the students to get further information about the Olympic Games and some famous athletes.
Teaching difficulties and emphases: To get the students to know how to read a speech and some background knowledge about the history and the development of the Olympic Games.
Step1: Leading-in
It is known that the Olympic Games are held every four years and it is a great honor for a country to host the Games. Ask the students the following questions to get the students to know more about the Olympic Games:
1) Have you ever seen any Olympic Games ?
2) Where were they held?
3) Do you think they are exciting? Why?
4) Who is your favorite athlete ? Why?
Step 2: Fast reading for general ideas
Get the students to go through the passage as quickly as possible and try to find answers to the three questions in part A. Just focus on and identify the information needed to answer the questions.
1) What is the speech about?
2) Where were the ancient Olympic Games held?
3) Who restarted the modern Olympic Games?
A 1) The history and significance of the Olympic Games.
2) At Olympia in Greece.
3) Pierre de Coubertin.
Step 3: Listening and detailed reading for more important information
1. Play the tape for the students to listen to the speech and try to pay attention to the stress and the intonation.
2. Students read the speech a second time and complete Parts C1 and C2 at page 24 individually to check their reading comprehension .
