Abstract: This paper analyses the position of the Chinese New Zealanders, first as a barely tolerated alien

group to be legislated out ( from the 19 to the mid 20 centuries) , and then as a largely middleclass
immigrant group to be w elcomed in the hope of forging international linkages and benefiting the economy ( from
