II II Abstract Since late 1960s, along with economic, social and cultural transformation, sociological thoughts and research on women’s living condition and development have been initiated and deepened. Nowadays, womens status has become the measure of social progress and respect for human rights in a country or region. In the first half, this paper takes three individual cases for example. The paper proposes the significance of marriage for women’ life, and also tries to summarize how marital status influences women. However, as for the detailed and concrete influencing mechanism, it varies from person to person. The paper thinks the reason for that difference is that women respond to varied situation by varied strategies, and social opinions take varied attitudes. In the second half, more general survey statics support the conclusion from individual cases. Female or male, living in rural or urban, on-job or housewife, and other items decide how much and how marital status matters to living condition. For example, marriage means much more to rural housewives than any other group; for single men and women, women are more easily rejected from society. What is more, urban women are much more flexible to marital status in comparison to rural women, as the former have stronger dependence conscious and advantaged personal abilities. Marriage has not only physical significance, as well as symbiotic indication. When marriage comes to be necessity, its collapse throws great pressure upon individuals. High identification on family and disgust upon undesirable requests from village and country make the condition worse, which may be the primary reasons.
