* Root extend to several times the edge of the canopy. There can be deep roots on some trees under the trunk and under the canopy of the tree; this occurs primarily when soil is well drained. Roots are typically above the water table and above any hardpan or compacted soil layers; many of the small diameter roots are in the top 12 inches * Soil is being spread over the root ball in this photograph. This cuts off oxygen and water exchange between atmosphere and roots. * Some roots grow up toward the soil surface and proliferate in the loose soil and mulch placed over the root ball. Some of these roots can end up growing against or around the trunk as shown here. These can become stem girdling roots as the trunk and roots continue to grow. Both these roots should be severed now and the root collar excavated to look for more * This large root (arrow) was circling the one gallon container 18 months ago. The tree was potted into a larger container without slicing the circling root; the root was only pencil-lead size at that time. Now the tree is a cull: it should not be planted into a larger container or planted into the landscape. * This root ball is firm and does not fall apart, indicating that the tree is well rooted into the media. There are few circling roots at the outside edge of the root ball. These two factors combined indicate good quality. This was accomplished by growing in the black plastic container treated with Spin OutTM (a product consisting of copper hydroxide in a latex paint). The Spin OutTM on the inside of the container appears gray in the photo above. * Plastic (shown above), metal, or fabric containers with holes in the sides reduce the incidence of circling roots. This occurs because air dries the media on the outside edge of the root ball preventing root growth there.
