ABSTRACTAt ABSTRACT At the beginning of the 20th century，along with the rapid development of suburbanization，the trend of metropolitan development was formed in American cites．However，there were stereotype and monotone in community plan and development during the suburbanizat ion，the plans revolved around the automobile and overlooked the feeling of residents in communities， especially when automobi les became the main choice of people． In connection with this situation，some planners and scholars with responsibility gathered and formed the Regional Planning Association of America(RPAA)on 18n Apri l in 1923．From the Garden city of Howard and regional conception of Geddes，they put forward “Regional ism’’ and “Regional City” ideas，and hoped to put their ideas in practice to ameliorate the condition of communities and the entire urbanized region．They have carried two plans out and buiit the Sunnyside Garden City and Radburn． Although the RPAA disbanded in the Depression，its thoughts and ideas still have the i tal i ty and infl uence in modern days． This dissertation sorts the development of New York and the Occident urban planning thoughts out to explain the foundat ion of the RP从，to reveal the organization’S image with introducing its planning practices and other activit ies，through the above analyses to investigate its influence and status of the RPAA，some thoughts about the urban planning and the funct ion of planning organizat ion raised at last． This dissertation is divided into three chapters expect for preface and conclusion．The conclusion． The preface expounds the meaning of theme，the situation of study and the angle of view of this dissertat ion． The first chapter mainly invest igates the background and the viewpoints of the RP从．With the motivation and stimulation of industrialization， especial ly the transportation innovation，the construction of canals and railways，the connection of the city region was firmed：the popularization of automobi les and the h
