These devices control the power flow. Clutch Driving Holding Band 1-Way Clutch This forward clutch can connect the ring gear of the front planetary unit to the torque converter turbine. This particular clutch is applied in each of the forward gears. Turbine Shaft Clutch Plates An exploded view of the forward clutch shows the relationship of the major parts. Note that the lined plates will be connected to a ring gear using internal splines. The unlined plates are connected to the clutch drum using external splines. Friction Plates Snap Ring Pressure Plate Steel Plates Return Springs Clutch Housing Piston Piston Seals Hydraulic pressure forces the piston to squeeze the clutch plates together and apply the clutch (lower part). When the hydraulic pressure is released, return springs (blue) will push the piston back, and there will be clearance between the plates (upper part). When this clutch is applied, the lined plates and planetary gear set member will be held stationary. This clutch is also called a brake. Piston Return Springs Piston Seals Pressure Plate Friction Plates Steel Plates Apply Plate This Low-Reverse Clutch is a holding clutch. It is similar to a driving clutch except the unlined clutch plates are splined to the transmission case. When this clutch applies, the planetary members it engages are held stationary.
