Chapter 9 Communicating with parents and carers Contents The rights of parents Different styles of parenting and family structures Parents and carers as partners Communication skills The rights of parents The Children Act 1989 The Children Act also introduced the concept of parental responsibility to promote the idea that parents have responsibilities’ towards their children. Parental responsibility include the right to : Choose the religion of the child Choose where the child should live Choose a name for the child and to register their birth Protect and look after the child Consent to medical treatment on behalf of the child Make sure that their child is in full-time education between the ages of five and sixteen years Apply for a passport for the child Appoint a legal guardian National Standards for the Regulation of Day Care and Childminding Different style of parenting Permissive parents : allow their children lots of personal choices and responsibility Authoritarian parents: the opposite of Permissive parents; attempt to manage, control and limit the behaviour of their children Authoritative parents: try to manage their Children behaviour Different family structures Adoptive family Extended family Homosexual/lesbian family Mixed ethnic background Nomadic family Nuclear family Reconstituted family Single-parent family Communal families Think about your own upbringing and answer the following questions Did you parent/s say what time you had to be back home by in the evenings?
