PAGE PAGE VI Abstract Mayang Miao Autonomous County is situated in the northwest of Hunan province with Chenshui River flowing across it. At the upper reach of the river is “Shang Mayang” and at the lower reach is “Xia Mayang”. Taking Gaocun dialect of “Xia Mayang” as the research object, this thesis adopts fieldwork study method and case study method and describes the Chinese character “Zhe” in Mayang dialect in great detail. Meanwhile, this thesis analyzes and studies the usage, grammarization and the grammatical rules of “Zhe”. It mainly consists of the following six parts. The first chapter is introduction. This chapter first briefly introduces the culture, geography and history of Mayang Miao Autonomous County, then summarizes the previous studies on “Zhe”, and finally clarifies the research significance, methods and data sources. The second chapter is the verb “Zhe”. This chapter mainly analyzes the three verb usages of “Zhe”: suffer from, lose or use, take turns. The third chapter is the auxiliary verb “Zhe”. The auxiliary verb “Zhe” means “need” or “may”. This chapter compares the two meanings in terms of syntax and semantics. Furthermore, in semantics and pragmatics ,it tells the differences between “Zhe” and “Yao”. The fourth chapter is the preposition “Zhe”. This chapter first introduces that “Zhe” can be the mark of the passive voice and then analyzes the sentences with both “Zhe” and “Dan” in them from the perspective of syntax, semantics and pragmatics. The fifth chapter is the auxiliary “Zhe”. The auxiliary “Zhe” can be both a dynamic anxiliary and a mood one. This chapter first describes the “present perfect” of “Zhe” and then compares Zhe” with “Guo”. As far as a mood auxiliary is concerned, this chapter studies it mainly from the moods of doing something from somebody and warning somebody. The sixth chapter is the grammarization of “Zhe”.
