somehow. This is not only because this course is not important in traditional concepts,
but also because art students are not treated differently in English teaching process. Art
major students are indeed a special group in English learning. Most of them suffer from
weak English foundation, low motivation of learning English and heavy burden of
professional courses, etc. They are in urgent need of a specifically designed English
course. However, it is regretful to point out that English teaching for college art majors
have been lingering around the edge for a long time, and research into this area is far
from enough. This thesis holds the idea that English teaching to college art students
should be a scientific integration of General English and ESP, rather than choose either
one of the two. Therefore, to look into college art students? English learning needs in
detail and to teach them English with a more targeting teaching methodologies are quite
necessary.
Purpose of the Study
The purpose of this study is to find out college art students needs in English learning,
to explore current situation of English teaching to college art students, and to propose
some suggested improvement.
For college students, English learning should not only be the acknowledgment or
mastery of language structure and grammar, but also be their comprehensive
development in understanding the target language, their cognitive abilit y, their mastery
of language skills and culture background of the target language related to their
professional areas, etc. The aims of English teaching now has also changed. In the
macro aspect, to improve students? understanding of culture background of the target
language and to improve communicating skills are becoming more important as
required in the new College English Syllabus(2007). In the micro aspect, college art
students could use more communicating skills in their future life rather than aca
