Chapter 16 Photojournalism 1.Basics of photojournalism Pictures are one of the the most important parts if a newspaper. Pictures help editors and reporters tell the storied they must tell. They inform and illustrate. Taking good pictures is not easy. Working as a photojournalist is even harder. That takes talent, skill, practice, and persistence. Much of the work of the photojournalist is going on assignment. 1.1. Establishing shots Establishing shots seek to take a broad view of the scene where the action or event is taking place. They are designed to give viewers a good idea of the entire scene of the action and even beyond. 1.2. Midrange Shots Midrange shots bring the viewer closer to the subject. They are good for showing action because they often take in movement. They put the subject within a context. 2. Photographer’s Commitment 2.2. Good photojournalists must be committed to the idea of the photojournalism telling stories with the camera. Good photographers believe in the importance and power of photojournalism. 3. The Photojournalists in Action To be a photojournalist you have to take pictures and be ready to do at all times. Potential photojournalist should keep the following rules of action in mind. 3.1. Plan Photojournalists and editors should talk about their photo assignments as thoroughly as possible. Editors should help plan what the photographers will shoot. 3.2.
