Chapter 17 Publication and Web Site Design Design is a vital part of the journalistic process. Good design and presentation can enhance credibility. It can also lift the morale of those within the organization. 1.Design Design is a visual process with content as the chief factor. Design is a way of presenting a reader with information and a way of communicating to the reader something about that information. Students learning design must understand these fact: They control everything that goes on their page. Why design for certain types of publications is done in certain ways. Design refers to the overall appearance of a publication. Design takes in not only the way the elements are laid out on any one page but also how different sections of a publication relate to each other with body type, headline, the way pictures are cropped, the positioning of advertisements, and the types of designs and shape used in standing heads and logos. 1.1.Visual Logic Principles : Big to small. Top to bottom. Left to right. Dark to light. Concepts : Balance: Putting the elements of design together so that all have the chance to be seen by the viewer. Contrast and focus: Contrast is the relationship of design elements as they are viewed by the eye.( Difference ) Focus is the way a designer uses contrast to direct the eye of the reader. Economy/simplicity Purpose: to present content. Repetition/variety Repetition gives strength and stability. The reader needs variety as well as repetition. 1.2. Basic Elements with Which to Work 1.2.1.Type Type is one of the most important tools that an editor has to work with. It is marvelously versatile. Families of Type 1st way: Modern typefaces ( vertical stress) Old-style typefaces 2nd way: Display type ( for headlines design) Body type( for body copy) Serif and Sans Serif Serif types are typefaces that have small extensions at the ends of strokes.
