PAGE PAGE vi Abstract Coercion at the discourse-level is a universal language phenomenon. Just like other forms of construction units, discourse is also an independent construction unit. When the form and function of the discourse conflict with each other, the discourse construction coercion occurs. However, construction grammar, which is the branch of cognitive linguistics, does not extend its research object to discourse. It is necessary to study discourse construction coercion. Firstly, construction grammar still limits its research object in sentence. Discourse construction grammar does not draw enough attention. Secondly, construction grammar does not do any further research on the discourse construction coercion. Thirdly, the forming mechanism and some other characteristics of the discourse coercion are not interpreted. In addition, studies of discourse construction coercion should not limit the theoretical basis into the construction grammar itself. This study adheres to the basic thoughts of cognitive grammar, and attempts to reveal the forming mechanism and distinguishing standard between discourse coercion and pragmatic failure under the discourse construction grammar. In light of the theme of discourse construction coercion, this thesis will mainly focus on the following questions:How to represent discourse construction coercion in terms of lexical features, rhetorical feature, structural feature and register feature? What is the mechanism of forming discourse construction coercion? What are the characteristics of discourse construction coercion? This thesis is divided into five parts. The first part introduces the notion of discourse construction coercion and reviews the preceding researches of construction coercion and discourse construction coercion. The second part describes this phenomenon from five aspects: lexical feature, grammatical feature, rhetorical feature, structural feature and register feature.
