PAGE PAGE IV On Winckelmanns Historiography Abstract: John Joachim Winckelmann (1717-1768) is an outstanding art historian and connoisseur, aesthetic theorists and archaeologists of German Enlightenment in the 18th century. His masterpiece is History of Ancient Art(Geschichte der the Kunst Altertums, 1764) and Thinking on Imitation of Greek Art in Painting and Sculpture (Gedanken über, die Nachahmung der griechischen-Werke the und Bildhauerkunst in der Malerei, 1755, referred to On Greek Art Simulation ). History of Ancient Art published in 1764.Two years later, It was translated into French. He pioneered a new era of scientific study in history of art, known as the father of modern art history”. He was across-time figure of Western history of art and thoughts, so his impacts could not be ignored. Thompson thought that History of Ancient Ar was a milestone, not only in practical ways, but more importantly in the concept of development, and especially in the field of archeology and art research in Greek. Winckelmann got prestige for History of Ancient Art, people concerned mainly with his aesthetics, but ignored his contribution on his historiography.
