Last but not least, grateful acknowledgements are also made to the faculty of the School of Foreign Studies as well as my family. ii ii Abstract Lucky Jim, a controversial book by Kingsley Amis, has aroused various argumentations since it came out. It has thus brought Amis great fame and wealth. It is really a great book, each reader can gain his particular interpretation from the book. It has been taken as the representative of The Movement literature; it has also been taken as a proletarian novel for its concern of the working class. Kingsley Amis is considered the spokesman of the Angry Young Men for the ―anger‖ showed in this novel. What‘s more, the cultural connotation of this book also attracts a lot of critics. To the author of this thesis, Lucky Jim is in fact a symphony, dialogue and carnival of different values and ideas, Jim being the outstanding carnival figure. The Carnivalesque has its deep fountain from ancient carnival festivities and folk culture.
