II II Symbiotic Protection Strategy For Industrial Heritages By Huangpu River ABSTRACT Following the opening of the Shanghai port, the economic and social changes in Shanghai approached the second climax during the past two or three decades. With the rapid development of economy, urbanization and urban construction, the city of Shanghai has undergone tremendous changes, which makes her become one of the worlds densest cities. However, the urban sprawl and the urban suburbanization cause the decline of urban vitality, the increase of living cost and the reducing of the urban efficiency. The revival of city center becomes a new subject. The new round of development urgently requires the city to return to round of development, and strength the restore of remaining resources. From another point of view, Shanghai was registered as the second batch of national historical and cultural city in 1986. Despite the Governments speeding up the pace of legislation on protection of cultural heritages and the increasing of capital investment as well as the enhancing awareness of social protection and the increased restore practices, but relative to the maneuvering of the urbanization process, some of these results seems to be bleak, the historical heritages draws the short straw, surviving in the cracks of the city difficultly. Because of the adjustment of industrial structure, a large number of industrial heritages emerge along the waterfront of Huangpu River. Characterized by important historical, artistic, scientific, economic and social value, they are the vector of the memories of the city. Through the protection and reuse of them, the economy of downtown area will be revived to obtain huge economic benefits. At the same time, the landscape in the center of the city will be optimized and the vitality of downtown area will be irradiated.
