Knowledge of available technology, standardization and moving flow can shorten overall production preparation time. * Always place the entrance and exit of the equipment and the cell together. Then with the addition of hanedashi devices, all the operator will need to do is load. Facilitate an open room style layout and easy to reconfigure equipment. This will allow to easily respond to changes in demand. Layout should facilitate ease of supplying materials to the cell from the rear. Equipment should be portable. You will be paying to own and operate it even if the increase demand never materializes. Machine speeds should be set to match the takt time and no faster. Big machines require more power, more space, bigger frameworks, etc. Think of it like buying a computer and then adding the additional functions, memory, software and peripherals as you require them.
