People are not sure who had the idea first to open a supermarket but it is now usually accepted that they started in the United States. But in 1916, Clarence Saunders opened a self-service grocery store which was very successful although it did not sell any fresh food, like meat, fruit or vegetables. Customers used to stand in front of the counter in a grocery store and were served by shop assistants. But in 1916, Clarence Saunders opened a self-service grocery store which was very successful although it did not sell any fresh food, like meat, fruit or vegetables. However, by 1930 the first true supermarket selling groceries at discount prices, including fresh food, and providing free parking had been opened by Michael Cullen. It was called King Kullen (inspired by the story of King Kong) and its slogan was “Pile it high. Sell it low.” Within 5 years, Cullen had opened another 16 stores. European countries followed in the 1940s and 50s and there has been rapid growth in developing countries since the 1990s. Today, most supermarkets also sell clothes, CDs, household goods and even petrol. Some have grown to become so big that they are called Super Stores or Hypermarkets.
