Cuban Picassos 　　Barbara Mejides, a Cuban historian, has a keen interest in people in Cuba whose last name is Picasso. 　　She has been studying these people for a long time and has made some amazing discoveries. Of the people she has interviewed, it seems that at least 30 are descendants of Francisco Picasso. 　　Francisco Picasso was Pablo Picasso’s grandfather. He left Spain for Cuba in 1864 where he worked as a customs administrator in Havana. He also established a relationship with a woman named Cristina Serra. Francisco and Cristina had four children, and the 30 people Mejides interviewed are either the great-grandchildren or great-great-grandchildren of Francisco and Cristina. 　　There are musicians, carpenters, and doctors among these Cuban Picassos, but, so far Mejides has not discovered any artists. However, Gloria Molina Picasso is a fashion designer—just like Paloma, Pablo Picasso’s daughter. Then, there is young Yoan Picasso. Yoan is an 11-year-old school boy and his passions are football and art, and guess how he signs his paintings? “Picasso” of course! Reading While you read B. Pablo Picasso (1891–1973) 　　Born in Malaga, Spain, Picasso was without doubt one of the greatest artists of the twentieth century. With George Braque, he established Cubism and then went on to introduce Surrealism. He lived in France, returning to Spain occasionally; however, after the Spanish Civil War, he was reluctant to return to Spain at all. His most famous painting, Guernica, was inspired by war and was a reaction to the Nazi bombing of the Basque town of Guernica. 　　Among his many other famous paintings are My Pretty and Night Fishing.
