Unit 11 Packing 1.Functions of Packing Protects the goods from damage makes it easy to identify goods enables manufacturers, sellers and customers to move goods from place to place freely helps the sellers to push the sales of goods. Two forms of packing （1）outer packing for transportation； （2）inner packing for sales. 2. Packing containers Bags: paper/plastic/linen bags Sack: jute Carton: usually made of corrugated cardboard fixed by tapes or metal bands Case: made of wood fixed with metal bands or wires and lined with tin foil Box: which is small and may be made of wood, cardboard or metal Crate: not fully enclosed Drum: cylinder-shaped container for carrying liquids, chemicals and paints and may be made of metal, wood or cardboard. Can or tin: small metal container for paint, oil or foodstuff Carboy: glass or plastic container used for chemical Container: large metal box for transport by rail, sea or air. FCL: Standard (20` or 40`(ft)) container that is stuffed (loaded) and un-stuffed (discharged) under the risk and account of one shipper and only one consignee, in practice it means whole container is intended for one consignee. Pallet: a tray or platform for moving loads 3. marking 3.1Fuctions of Marking Identification / inspection / calculation They should be made boldly, with waterproof and salt-proof ink, so that they can always be easily read. ? They should be in black, with red or orange for dangerous cargo. ? The marks should be in both English and the language of the country of destination. ? The final destination point should be made to stand out so that the package can be easily identified with the corresponding shipping documents and easily located for customs clearance and delivery. 3.2 Classification of Marks Shipping marks (consignee’s marks) Indicative marks ( country of origin/weight/ dimensions) Warning marks (cautionary marks) handle with care top
