Unit 10 You are supposed to shake hands

Part 1 Teaching material analysis
In this unit, the topic is about customs.
Different countries have different customs. By learning this unit I want to make students realize what people are supposed to do in different situations, such as visiting someone’s home, going to friends’ party, having dinner with overseas students, which is help for them to know different countries’ customs as well. Students can also connect Chinese culture with culture in other countries to make comparison.
In this part today, we will specially focus on the custom that people in different countries meet for the first time By doing this, I also want to arouse their sense of politeness and cultural awareness.
Part 2 Teaching Aims and Demands
1. Knowledge Objects
(1) Key Vocabulary: bow, kiss, be supposed to, shake hands, customs
(2) Target Language: What are people in different countries supposed to do when they meet for the first time?
Theyre supposed to bow/ kiss / shake hands
2. Ability Objects
(1) Train students’ listening ability.
(2) Train students’ communicative competence.
(3) develop the ability of learning by themselves.
3. Moral Objects:
Before you meet foreigners, you should know some customs. In this way, you can act politely and properly, which will lead to better communication. what’s more, it can let us realize the importance of respecting each other.
Part 3 teaching keys and difficulties
1. Teaching keys: let students grasp the new words: bow, kiss, be supposed to, shake hands, customs news phrases: be expected to/ be supposed to. New sentence patterns: what are you supposed to do when you meet someone for the first time? you’re supposed to shake hands.
2. Teaching difficulties: get students to be familiar with some countries’ customs.
